In our weekly column in the Solihull& Warwickshire Guardian we wrote:

Amongst all the "dot coms" and "dot orgs" and various "dot uk"s that scatter our daily lives, there is one amongst these breeds that has surprisingly failed to take off - the "dot me".

These are personal domain names, intended for individual use. In an age where "me, me, me" seems to be the anthem of a generation, the failure of "dot me" to be another must have accessory is puzzling. I have supplied coms, cos, orgs, nets and even an info, but never a me, No-one has ever even approached me with an enquiry about having one. I am convinced that I have not e-mailed to one, received a mail from one or looked at a web site addressed with one.

Why not? As these little beauties are available for no more than loose change, it is not money that discouraging people from snapping them up. One must conclude, then, that they have been undersold.

So, why would you want one? Answer - to give yourself a permanent identity in the world of the web. Most people's personal email address takes the identity of their service provider. Get your home broadband from Tiscali and you have a Tiscali email address, sign up with AOL and you have an AOL email address. Great for them, but not for you - as you discover when you decide to go Blueyonder for a while and need to inform your entire Address Book of the impending change.

Have your own domain name, use an email address like archibald@arbuthnot.me.uk and it can move with you, yours for ever. You would still be using it a decade or two hence. Why is nobody doing it?
